We offer regular clubs for young carers in Aylesbury and High Wycombe for three age groups; 6-9, 10-12 and 13+. Young carers in Buckingham (YC2) have clubs on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. The 13+ group meet on 1st Friday and all of the young carers come together on the 3rd Friday.
Club nights are a fun, social opportunity where young carers can meet up in a safe and relaxed atmosphere, with access to games, computers, table tennis, football, pool etc. We run craft and cooking activities and a meal is provided in Aylesbury and High Wycombe. There are trained staff and volunteers for the young carers to talk to if they wish and we sometimes run special workshops.
We provide small support groups for young carers who have similar needs. The groups are an opportunity for young carers to gain more understanding of their caring role and to help them deal with difficult situations. These groups also incorporate fun activities and help to forge friendships.
Examples of groups we currently run are:
- Sibshop – for those caring for a sibling
- Fused – for those caring for someone with mental health or addition issues
- A group for those caring for someone with a physical disability
- Small groups aimed at building self-esteem and keeping young carers safe in the real and virtual world
Some of our young carers have very limited access to social activities because of their caring role, so during schools holidays we can offer some activities and outings. This may be a day doing art, a visit to Wendover Woods, a trip to an Alpaca farm or occasionally further afield like a day at the seaside or a safari park. For older young carers there may be overnight stays and short breaks. We never charge for any of our activities so that all of our young carers have equal access to our services.
One to one work
Some young carers need more intensive support. We provide Support Workers who cover ages 6-12 and 13+ years old to help with issues such as anxiety, anger and bereavement, to understand more about a specific illness or just to have someone to talk to.
The support that we offer depends on the needs of the individual and may change throughout their time at Young Carers Bucks.
